Sunday’s Bike Sale

The Bike Sale organised by Auckland Transport on Sunday 22/Nov was well covered by Tumeke volunteers. Finlay, Sanna, Andrew, Alex R, Mark, Alex M & Emilio were all there, selling bikes that had been donated and fixed up, talking to people about Tumeke, and dispensing advice.

Mark managed to sell his old Cannondale, Mort sold his even older De Ver and Andrew sold some ex-recycling centre bikes. My favourite thing there was an ancient Dutch (I think) road bike called ‘Fongers’ – it had a very unusual S-shaped fork, which the owner eventually admitted was both bent, and on backwards.

The 1 – 3pm Tumeke shift was busy, partly with people cleaning up their recently purchased steeds.

Tree of Bikes – almost there!

Childfund are in the final stages of creating their Christmas Tree made up of about 170 bikes! Tumeke were stoked to help out and can’t wait to see the finished product. The Official Lighting Ceremony will take place 8pm on Friday 28th November down at Queens Wharf and all are welcome. Put the date in the diary!

More on the project:

“The trusty bTree of Bikes visuals-all-d4ike is a favourite toy for Kiwi kids (and a wrapping paper nightmare for parents!) across the country. Across the ocean, however, in countries like Sri Lanka a bicycle means the difference between a treacherous 4-hour walk to school in the heat and a more manageable 45-minute cycle to the classroom.

To celebrate and highlight the bicycle as one of our many Gifts that Grow, ChildFund New Zealand together with the generous support of Beca and Enterprize Steel, are building a 7-metre tall Christmas Tree made from donated bikes, to be lit up in festive glory on Auckland’s Queen’s Wharf this December.” – https://www.childfund.org.nz/newsroom/bring-us-your-bikes

Some recent workshop photos

Thanks to Scott and Serena for sending us these photos – glad you were able to find and fix up some bikes for your touring around the country – wishing you a fantastic trip! Scott and Serena got in touch with Tumeke Cycle Space when they arrived in New Zealand from the States. Back home they are involved with their local community bike workshop – Electric City Bike Rescue so it was great to hear about what other workshops are up to and have fellow volunteers visit us in Auckland.

Cycle events on this Saturday – 6th September

This Saturday is a great day for cycling in Auckland! The new Grafton Gully cycle way is officially opening from 9.30am and the Greenwoods Corner business association are holding a ‘decorate your bike’ event at the local markets. Head along to one of these if you can, and then of course see us at the workshop on Sunday from 1-3pm for your maintenance needs.

Tumeke at the Bike Market

Tumeke Cycle Space attended the first ever Bike Market hosted by AK Transport on a rainy Saturday yesterday. It went really well and we talked to a bunch of good people – hope to see some of you down at the workshop when you need us next 🙂
